BCS represents Bangladesh private sector ICT industry as the only member from our country in the global forum of World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA : www.witsa.org), which is a consortium of 69 ICT industry associations from economies around the world representing over 90 percent of the world ICT market, and in the regional forum of Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organization (ASOCIO : www.asocio.org), that comprises the key ICT industry associations in their respective economies representing more than 10,000 IT companies in the Asia-Oceanian region. Recently BCS has been awarded at the national level for its outstanding & flawlessly contribution to expand the use of computer at the grass root level, development of human resources in computer, contribution to the formulation of National ICT Policy, exemption of tax & VAT from computer & accessories, representing Bangladesh private sector ICT in the global spectrum as the only member association from Bangladesh, composing text books on computer science & other books in Bangla, and developing Bangla key-board and software for implementing use of Bangla in computer. BCS at a Glance BCS Formation & Authentication •   Established in 1987 •   Registered in the Joint Stock Companies and Firms Registration Office in 1992 •   Became FBCCI Member in the 'A' category in 1993 •   Enrolled as Associate Member in ASOCIO in 1996 and became full Member in 2001 •   Registered as Member in WITSA in 1998 BCS Member Categories •   Hardware Vendors •   Software Developers •   ISP & Network Solution Providers •   IT Enabled Service Providers •   Multimedia Developers •   ICT Training Institutions •   Total number of Members enrolled 669 till November 17, 2008 BCS Activities •   Arranging seminars, workshops & conferences on issues related to ICT. •   Organizing computer exhibitions at home and arranging & managing Bangladesh showcases at overseas expositions. •   Publishing brochures, catalogues and reports. •   Arranging periodic meetings for improvement of relationship among members. •   Supplementing Government’s efforts in development of ICT. •   Representing local IT community in local and international forums. •   Performing activities on business promotion in the local and international market. •   Arranging training programs for members and ICT professionals. •   Representing members' view to the government and negotiating on related issues. •   Assist in formulating policy guideline and provide assistance to draft of ICT laws. •   Organizing programs on ICT awareness and market development singly and also in collaboration with the government and other stakeholders. BCS Achievements and Milestones •   Established in 1987, BCS is the first registered ICT trade association of Bangladesh in 1992. •   It started organizing ICT exhibitions first in 1993 and successfully continues the event on regular basis in the capital city of Dhaka and other cities. •   BCS joined Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organization (ASOCIO) in 1996 as Associate Member and became full Member in 2001. •   Syllabus was outlined and computer education was introduced in the SSC level in 1996 & in the HSC level in 1998 at the initiative of BCS. •   45 recommendations were made by the popularly known JRC committee in 1997 at the initiative of BCS for the development of ICT, few of which are as follows: -   Withdrawal of duties, tax & VAT from computer & its allied products -   Formation of National ICT Task Force headed by the Head of the Government -   Declaring ICT as a thrust sector -   Formulation of National ICT Policy -   Special incentives for the local and foreign investors & entrepreneurs •   Duties, tax & VAT on computer & its allied products were withdrawn in the budget of 1998 - 1999 at the initiative of BCS. •   In 1998, BCS registered as member of WITSA (The World Information Technology and Services Alliance), which is a consortium of 65 ICT industry associations from economies around the world representing over 90 percent of the world ICT market. •   BCS established the one stop ICT market in 1999 at the IBD Bhaban, Agargaon, Dhaka in the name of 'BCS Computer City' that has become the role model of its kind in the South Asia. •   BCS introduced ASOCIO Multilateral Trade Visit on ICT in the Asian-Oceanian region in 2000 starting from Dhaka. •   BCS successfully organized ASOCIO Officers Meeting in Dhaka in 2004. •   In collaboration with the Government of Bangladesh, BCS started organizing the ICT Awareness Program in 2005 in divisional cities and district, and this program has been continuing on regular basis. •   BCS received National Award in 2008 as recognition of its outstanding contribution for the development and expand ICT of the country.  |
